Dear Tiffany
WITH JOHN WHEELER
Rebuilding a Life You Didn’t Plan

Tiffany sits down with longtime friend Carlos Campos, a familiar voice to anyone who listened to Sacramento radio in the 1990s and early 2000s. Carlos was one half of the popular Monica and Carlos morning show, but his story stretches far beyond the years he spent behind a microphone.

Carlos looks back at getting his start in radio as a teenager, learning the industry from the ground up, and eventually becoming part of one of Sacramento’s most recognizable morning shows. He shares the fun, the competition, the pressure, and some of the things he understands differently now about success, ego, and having a public voice.

Family became an even bigger part of Carlos’s identity because of what happened in his own childhood. When his father left, Carlos says he spiraled, stopped caring about school, and became self-destructive. Marriage later gave him a sense of purpose and the family structure he had always wanted.

That life also brought some of his hardest experiences. Carlos and his first wife lost their daughter Madison shortly after birth. Years later, after a 15-year marriage and five more children, Carlos was blindsided by divorce. He shares why that loss affected him so deeply, what it meant to mourn the future he thought he would have, and how he eventually learned to live with the parts of that grief that never completely disappeared.

Carlos eventually remarried, joining his five children with his wife’s three and creating a blended family of eight. He is honest about the reality of different parenting styles, changing custody schedules, discipline, step-parenting, and learning that what works for one child may not work for another.

Eight years into their marriage, Carlos says the work is still ongoing. There are check-ins, adjustments, mistakes, and plenty of trial and error. But there are also Christmas mornings filled with eight kids, family trips, one-on-one time with his stepchildren, and relationships that have grown through consistency and care.

From radio and career reinvention to divorce, faith, parenting, grief, and rebuilding, Carlos’s life looks very different from the one he once imagined. He has learned that different does not necessarily mean worse.
