WITH JOHN WHEELER
The Five Delusions of Med Spas

A strong lead count, a full schedule, and a close-knit team can all look like signs of a healthy med spa. Janelle and Rebekah challenge five assumptions that can keep leaders from looking closely at what is actually happening inside the business.

The first delusion is that the practice simply needs more leads. Some clinics may need stronger lead flow, but others already have plenty of inquiries and are losing them through slow response times, poor follow-up, weak conversion, or an untrained front desk. Even an automated reply is not enough if a human does not follow up before the lead goes cold. The answer starts with reviewing the data and determining whether the issue is lead volume, the ad itself, or how the team handles each inquiry.

A full schedule can be just as misleading. Busy does not automatically mean healthy when heavy discounts, cancellations, no-shows, or low revenue per visit are hurting the numbers. Janelle and Rebekah encourage leaders to reverse engineer performance instead of assuming a packed calendar equals strong results.

They also question the idea that a friendly team automatically has a healthy culture. Gossip, cliques, passive-aggressive communication, fake positivity, and weaponized feedback can exist even when people genuinely like one another. A healthier culture allows team members to speak directly, take ownership, and bring concerns to people who can address them.

Operations is another area that is often underestimated. Strong operators manage staffing, scheduling, inventory, coaching, conflict, providers, KPIs, labor, compliance, patient experience, promotions, morale, and more. At the same time, they should not disappear into the back office. Janelle and Rebekah believe strong operators stay visible and spend part of the day with the team and clients.

The final delusion is “that’s not my job.” They acknowledge that an overwhelmed employee may reach a breaking point and need support. But as a regular mindset, it creates silos and weakens teamwork, operations, and the patient experience. The strongest clinics are filled with people who step in without always having to be
