War, Addiction, and Finding a Way Back
Dear Tiffany
WITH JOHN WHEELER
War, Addiction, and Finding a Way Back

Giovanni Antonello sits down with Tiffany to share the long road between the person he was taught to be, the person he became while surviving, and the person he chose to build afterward.

Gio enlisted in the Army just before graduating high school and was deployed to Iraq less than a year later. The deployment stretched to 15 months and gave him something he still remembers clearly: brotherhood, adrenaline, and an intense sense of purpose. It also exposed him to violence and loss he had no real language for once he came home.

So he kept moving. He became the guy who made everyone laugh, did something crazy to lighten the mood, and rarely let anyone see what was underneath. That same identity followed him home, where alcohol gradually became less about having fun and more about quieting everything he had never processed. Gio talks openly about blackout drinking, the culture of not talking about deployment, and how easy it was to keep functioning while his personal life was falling apart.

Eventually, the consequences became impossible to ignore. His marriage ended. A career he had worked toward slipped away. Depression and self-sabotage deepened, and two DUIs forced Gio to confront not only what he had done, but what could have happened to someone else because of his choices.
There was no single movie-scene turnaround. Gio describes recovery as gradual. He stopped drinking, began rebuilding for himself and his children, and learned to stop measuring his worth through the people he thought he had disappointed.

The relationship he thought he had lost also changed. After three years divorced, Gio and his wife chose each other again. They rebuilt trust, remarried, and created the kind of relationship where hiding, lying, and pretending no longer have a place.

Now studying to become a teacher, Gio wants to take everything he learned from war, addiction, failure, fatherhood, and recovery and pour it into the next generation. His past is still part of him. It just no longer gets to decide who he becomes next.
