Why Teams Stop Respecting Leadership

Janelle and Rebekah take on a leadership topic that affects every med spa team: what happens when respect for leadership starts to fade. Respect is not usually lost overnight. It is built slowly, and it can also be lost slowly through repeated patterns that make the team question whether leadership is willing to step up, follow through, and hold people accountable.

They start with one of the biggest respect killers: avoiding tough conversations. No leader loves walking into uncomfortable coaching moments, but ignoring problems does not make them go away. When a team sees poor behavior tolerated, standards ignored, or coaching delayed, they begin to notice what leadership allows. The person who needs coaching may also start pushing boundaries because they know no one will say anything.

Favoritism is another major issue, whether it is intentional or only perceived. If a top producer is treated differently, if one team member gets away with being late while another gets written up, or if coaching standards change depending on the person, resentment builds quickly. Janelle and Rebekah explain why leaders need to be honest about where they may be making exceptions and why perceived favoritism still needs to be addressed.

The conversation also covers reactive leadership. Leaders can attend meetings, check boxes, and keep the business running while still losing trust if there is no structure, no follow-through, and no action behind their words. Strong communication only matters when it is backed by integrity and execution. Without that, teams eventually stop bringing issues forward because they do not believe anything will change.

Janelle and Rebekah also talk about the difference between being liked and being respected. Early-career leaders often fall into the trap of wanting to be friends with everyone, avoiding boundaries, skipping hard conversations, or making decisions based on keeping people happy. But being liked is not the same as being trusted, and a team can enjoy a leader personally while still not respecting their leadership.

The conversation closes with the question of whether lost respect can be earned back. The answer is yes, but it takes work. Leaders have to be self-aware, own their part, accept feedback, communicate what will change, and then prove it through consistent action over time. A single conversation will not rebuild respect. A long pattern of better leadership can.
